When Martin Pugh and Jen Lewis agreed to hike the Fish River Canyon in southern Namibia under the direction of Kevin Walker, there were mixed, but mostly positive, feelings about what sort of experience this was going to be.

Kevin, who had done the hike before but will freely admit he has a terrible memory, had painted a picture for us of halcyon days strolling through the most beautiful place on earth, laughing with great chums.
Jen was therefore under the impression she could do the walk in 3 days in a pair of flip flops while Martin was fairly sure that the 5 practice day hikes he’d done, lugging 25kg of B&Q-purchased mortar in his backpack, were worse than the actual thing would be.
We were fools.
As well as seeking to entertain you all, this diary is a written record of the expedition so that we never gloss over the hell that was our five days in the Fish River Canyon.
